Gauss curvature of an ODE-surface

For the surface associated to a first-order ODE u=ϕ(x,u), the Gaussian curvature is

K=u(A(ϕ))=(ϕxu+ϕϕuu+ϕu2),

where A=x+ϕu.

This formula implies that first-order ODEs with curvature K(x,u) satisfy the inhomogeneous inviscid Burgers equation

ϕx+ϕϕu=uK(x,t)dt.
